updated 10:39 a.m. ET Jan. 8, 2012

MANCHESTER, England - Manchester United took a measure of revenge on 10-man Manchester City on Sunday, ousting the defending champion from the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory marked by Paul Scholes coming out of retirement.

Wayne Rooney headed in two goals and Danny Welbeck struck on a volley in the first half of the third-round match. City staged a second-half comeback with Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero scoring in a tense finish. City's Vincent Kompany was ejected in the 12th minute for fouling Nani.

City humiliated United with a 6-1 Premier League victory at Old Trafford this year and beat its rival in last year's FA Cup semifinals,

The 37-year-old Scholes came out of retirement Sunday morning and replaced Nani in the second half, but gave away the ball that led to Aguero's 65th minute-goal.
