Recovery and Continuity: The Distinction

March 10th, 2012

In the past couple of years there have been a large number of natural disasters causing untold amounts of damage, setting numerous companies back years if not decades. There is not much we can do to keep away from these disasters, but we can be ready for them. Is your company ready?

Most firms have at least basic protection from emergencies and disasters in spot. The most common types of protection are insurance coverage, server and pc backup, and basic preparations as required by law. Even though these protective measures are regarded as adequate for most organizations, there is still an opportunity a disaster will strike, leaving your organization in the lurch.

In the current months and years an rising quantity of occurrences, such as the earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand, have caused widespread disruption to organizations. To counter this, two enterprise initiatives have risen to the forefront: Disaster Recovery (DR) and Organization Continuity Planning (BCP). In truth, these two terms have grow to be widespread buzzwords, a quick world wide web search returns more than 53 million hits on organization continuity alone. The difficulty is that many experts are unclear on what every truly is. It is essential to be clear on each topic and the basic actions to take to be prepared for any disaster.

What is a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)? BCP, initial noticed throughout the Y2K scare of the late 90s, is a program that covers the way an organization prepares for and maintains all critical organization functions. BC organizing is comprised of activities that make sure upkeep, stability, and recoverability of service before, throughout, and right after a disaster. The program is typically set up on a day-to-day basis, and covers the entire organization.

It is important to have a BCP for your organization due to the fact if some thing takes place and you cannot deliver to your buyers, they will go to an additional company.

What is Disaster Recovery? Disaster Recovery is regarded as a part of the overall continuity program that focuses on the technical side of the business, which includes components such as information backup and recovery. Feel of BCP as an umbrella and DR is under the umbrella if you do not have a disaster recovery strategy, the general umbrella is far more or much less useless.

What Must be in Your DR and BCP Plans? These plans both share a quantity of similarities, normally following the very same actions involving the exact same elements. Each plans must consist of:

An operational program for a quantity of disasters that could happen in your geographical location. The plans really should cover occurrences as tiny as personal computer hardware errors and as huge as enormous natural disasters.
A succession plan for you or your leading management.
Education for substitute employees on essential tasks.
Cross coaching of your staff on the fundamentals of diverse roles so they will be in a position to take over if require be.
A communication plan focused on diverse crises, such as approaches of communicating if networks are down.
Off-site meeting locations for staff and managers.
A concentrate on safety. Foster partnerships and communication with neighborhood and emergency response services: Fire, Police, National Guard, Search and Rescue. Ideally, all personnel really should at least know standard initial aid. If you have personnel who are volunteer members of neighborhood Emergency Response Services, ask them to be responsible for teams.
Daily plans to backup your Enterprise systems, along with education and testing of recovery of systems.
Training and testing of all staff to practice recovery activities in scenarios as realistic as possible.

It is crucial that you conduct typical tests of your systems and processes, and make adjustments as essential. Be conscious that your business is constantly altering and so should your Business Continuity and Disaster Recover Plans. With a cautiously ready and practiced program, your business should be ready to face a range of disasters with minimal downtime. Isaac stirs up horrible memories for New Orleans residents

Weather Channel Meteorologist Jim Cantore reports from New Orleans where rainfall is still expected to reach 12 to 20 inches. The full scope of Isaac's damage to the Gulf Coast states won't be fully known until Friday.

By Kate Snow , NBC News

As Isaac lingered outside her door, Connie Uddo was busy Wednesday calling elderly friends in her neighborhood to make sure they were holding up. She, like the majority of New Orleans residents, had no power.

?It?s just a tedious, long, arduous storm,? she said.

Storms are a big part of life in New Orleans. They always have been. There are records of hurricanes hitting the Crescent City as far back as the 1700s.

But things changed when Hurricane Katrina struck seven years ago ? especially for Uddo.

?Our neighborhood, it was condemned, uninhabitable and unsafe. You had to have a pass to get in,? she said.

That is something she never wants to live through again ? she doesn?t think she could handle it. As Isaac was bearing down, she felt a familiar mixture of dread and anxiety.

A downgraded Isaac floods coastal communities and forces new evacuations, but levees still hold.

?The wind had me a little freaked out at points last night because our house was shaking a lot and the windows were rattling,? she said.

Related: Isaac loses steam, but brings flooding, power outages
Related: 'They were screaming away': Louisiana man recounts rescue?

Uddo and her kids had evacuated just before Katrina hit. In October of 2005, when she returned to her 90-year-old wood and plaster home, she found a mold-infested mess. The first floor, which they had renovated as rental units, had been under several feet of water, which took a month to drain out.?

?It was horrific. It was shocking. It was something that I never thought I would ever see in my lifetime ... everything was gray.," she said. "It literally looked like a nuclear disaster. There were no birds, insects, squirrels. The silence was just deafening.?

Uddo thought about leaving for good. She cried ? a?lot.

?It wasn?t just the physical loss,? she said. ?It was the emotional loss of your community, your social network, your children?s friends.?

But Uddo decided to move back and rebuild. In January 2006, her family was the first of 10 families in her neighborhood to have electricity.

The storm has tested the city's post-Katrina flood defenses, leaving many roads impassable and creating a storm surge from Louisiana to Alabama. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

Lakeview, she said, was a ?green dot? on a city planning map ? a place that some planners thought would become nothing but green space with no residential homes.?

She wouldn't hear of it. "We?re a hundred-year-old neighborhood. You don?t tell a hundred-year-old neighborhood that."

So she rebuilt, and she convinced others to do the same. Uddo would walk around the neighborhood asking plumbers, roofers, builders and other tradespeople for their phone numbers. Since phone books no longer worked, she compiled a list. She counseled her neighbors at her dining room table. She recruited teen-aged volunteers to come to the neighborhood and clean up the front yards so that returning residents wouldn't be as shocked as she had been when she first drove in.

Eventually, Uddo opened St. Paul?s Homecoming Center, which still operates and helps residents who fled Katrina. The center has coordinated more than 50,000 volunteers.

As soon as Isaac lets up enough, probably on Thursday, Uddo plans to go back to the Center and start the cleanup. So far, she hasn?t seen any major flooding in her neighborhood. On a walk earlier Wednesday she checked on the trees she recently planted. They?re tattered, but still standing. The elderly neighbors she called are doing all right too. And for that, she?s thankful.

?Hopefully tomorrow we?ll be back in action,? she said.

Wednesday was spent napping, having tea, catching up on laundry and house chores.

?I really feel blessed. I don?t want to jinx it. It?s not over. But it could?ve been worse.? So many things could?ve happened.?

Uddo thinks a storm like Isaac solidifies her community.

Weather Channel Meteorologist Jim Cantore reports from New Orleans where rainfall is still expected to reach 12 to 20 inches. The full scope of Isaac's damage to the Gulf Coast states won't be fully known until Friday.

?Once again we?re a stronger, more unified community because of it. And that?s the silver lining. You come out stronger."

One of the biggest lessons of Katrina, Uddo said, is that neighbors have to look out for each other. Before Katrina, they never would have coordinated before a storm. On Tuesday night, before the power went out, Uddo and her husband went up the block for a neighborhood gathering. They made plans together about what they would do if the water rose on their streets.

?At the end of the day, all we have is each other,? she said.

Harvard scientists grow human cells onto nanowire scaffold to form 'cyborg' skin

DNP Artificial skin

Growing human tissue is old hat, but being able to measure activity inside flesh is harder -- any electrical probing tends to damage the cells. But a new breakthrough from Harvard researchers has produced the first "cyborg" tissue, created by embedding functional, biocompatible nanowires into lab-grown flesh. In a process similar to making microchips, the wires and a surrounding organic mesh are etched onto a substrate, which is then dissolved, leaving a flexible mesh. Groups of those meshes are formed into a 3D shape, then seeded with cell cultures, which grow to fill in the lattice to create the final system. Scientists were able to detect signals from heart and nerve cell electro-flesh made this way, allowing them to measure changes in response to certain drugs. In the near-term, that could allow pharmaceutical researchers to better study drug interaction, and one day such tissue might be implanted in a live person, allowing treatment or diagnosis. So, would that make you a cyborg or just bionic? We'll let others sort that one out.

As Republicans nominate Romney, Ron Paul is a distant second

Alternate delegates celebrate after Mitt Romney secures the votes needed to get the Republican Party?s nomination.??

Mitt Romney was born in Michigan, served as governor of Massachusetts, vacations in New Hampshire (and France), saved the Olympics in Utah?but on Tuesday at the Republican National Convention, it was Chris Christie's New Jersey that gave him the number of delegates to formally nominate him to take on President Barack Obama.

The Garden State cast all 50 of its votes for Romney, putting him over the 1,144 needed to secure the nomination that had already essentially been his for months. The crowd gathered in Tampa cheered and called out "Mitt! Mitt! Mitt!" as giant television screens over the convention stage showed photos of Romney.

Romney won't formally be the nominee until he accepts the call in a prime-time speech on Thursday, but the state-by-state roll call vote gave him 2,061 delegates. Other Republicans picked up the remaining 202 delegates, with veteran Texas Rep. Ron Paul taking most of those not lining up behind the party establishment's pick.?More than a dozen delegates abstained. Texas offered the greatest diversity: one abstaining, one each for independent presidential candidate Buddy Roemer, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and Rep. Michele Bachmann (their sole votes), one for former Sen. Rick Santorum, 20 for Ron Paul and 130 for Romney.

Each state indulged in a little bit of home-style boasting. The person announcing the tally from Illinois joked that it would soon be home to former President Obama. Alabama's speaker bragged about football championships and a new airplane manufacturing plant. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell underlined that his home state of Kentucky hosts what he called the most important horse race in the world, the Kentucky Derby (he also seemed to cast the state's votes for "Mitch Romney.") Some states offered their thoughts and prayers for Louisiana, in the path of Hurricane Isaac seven years after the devastation wrought by Katrina. Louisiana offered its thanks.

Lawyer says tennis referee was incapable of murder

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A professional tennis referee accused of beating her 80-year-old husband to death has had two knee replacements and a shoulder replacement and couldn't have carried out the killing, her lawyer wrote in a court filing.

Lois Ann Goodman also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis, hearing loss and constant spinal pain that's controlled by an electronic device implanted in her spine and is awaiting another shoulder replacement, attorney Alison Triessl said in the filing late Monday.

"It is physically impossible for her to have done this," Triessl told The Associated Press in a phone interview Monday night.

Triessl asked the judge to reduce Goodman's $1 million bail to $100,000 or release her on electronic monitoring.

"Mrs. Goodman is not a danger to any person or the community," Triessl wrote in the motion.

Goodman and her husband, Alan, have three daughters and were nearing their 50th wedding anniversary when he was found dead on April 17 at the couple's condominium in the Woodland Hills neighborhood.

Authorities briefly accepted Lois Goodman's explanation that she returned home to find a blood-covered coffee mug and her husband lying in bed not breathing after most likely falling down the stairs.

Prosecutors now allege that Goodman bludgeoned her husband to death with a coffee cup that broke and then used the sharp handle to stab him. She was arrested last week in New York, where she was to serve as a line judge for this week's U.S. Open ? one of many high-profile tournaments she had worked since 1979.

Goodman agreed not to fight extradition and arrived back in California on Thursday. She has a bail hearing set for Wednesday.

Triessl wrote in Monday's filing that there was no chance Goodman would flee, noting that she doesn't have a passport and has lifelong ties to the San Fernando Valley where she was born, raised and went to school.

She noted that Goodman cooperated when police began investigating the death of her husband and submitted to three intensive interviews, driving herself to the police station when she was summoned.

"She arrived on time and was utterly forthcoming," Triessl said.

Given Goodman's cooperation, she denounced the Los Angeles Police Department's decision to wait until Goodman was in New York to arrest her. She said they could have asked her to turn herself in in California and she would have obliged.

Triessl gave the court 40 testimonial letters from other tennis umpires, neighbors, family and friends, lauding Goodman as a beloved friend, colleague, mother and grandmother who treated her husband like a king. Most who knew her referred to her by her nickname of "Lolo."

All nine bystanders wounded in Empire State shooting hit by police

NEW YORK (Reuters) - All nine of the bystanders wounded on Friday near the Empire State Building were hit by police gunfire, six by bullet fragments, when officers fatally shot a man who had killed a former coworker, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The shooting was a rare example of the drawbacks posed by so-called hollow-point bullets. The New York Police Department started using those 14 years ago to reduce the likelihood of hitting bystanders, even though in this case the use of such bullets may have resulted in the opposite effect.

The bullets have become standard issue for many law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, as a replacement for traditional bullets that can pass right through a suspect.

They are considered safer for bystanders because hollow-point bullets are designed to mushroom when they strike a person. They cause massive injuries, but rarely exit.

However, the hollow-point bullets are more prone to fragment or ricochet when they hit a hard object such as the concrete planters used at the popular tourist attraction as security barriers against terrorist attacks, studies show.

Six of the nine bystanders wounded on Friday were hit by shrapnel caused when the hollow bullets fragmented as they ricocheted off the planters, and three by bullets, police said.

New York police spokesman Paul Browne confirmed that the two officers who shot out-of-work fashion designer Jeffrey Johnson used hollow-point bullets.

Johnson, said by officials to have been laid off from his job last year, had fatally shot a former colleague with whom he had been feuding.

Former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said in situations like the one the two officers faced - an armed gunman waving a pistol on a crowded street - stopping the attacker swiftly is the primary goal.

"The idea (of using hollow-point bullets) is to move quickly, to stop the threat," he told Reuters. "You can knock someone down with one or two rounds a lot of the time."

Until 1998, the department had used what are known as full-metal-jacket bullets, which, enveloped in a thin layer of copper, often pass through a suspect and hit bystanders.

"As in all things with weapons and ammunition, there's certain tradeoffs that you have to make," Bratton said of the shrapnel created by police bullets.

A police department report released in 1998 compared collateral damage in police shootings using traditional and hollow-point bullets. It found that traditional bullets passed through bodies far more frequently than hollow-points.

A committee appointed to evaluate the report recommended to a board that handles complaints about the police that the department move to hollow points. The committee members spent a day at a New York police shooting range firing hollow-point and full-metal-jacket bullets into a gelatinous substance.

They concluded that the hollow-points caused less collateral damage except in one case.

"The one exception was a hollow-point which hit a frozen bit of the gelatin: it did not explode, but left minor fragments near the path of the bullet," their report said.

On Friday, the two officers, Craig Matthews and Robert Sinishtaj, fired on Johnson who appeared in a dramatic video to be drawing his .45-caliber pistol as he walked toward them.

Johnson could be seen in the video doubling over, wobbling and then collapsing while bystanders scattered.

Three of the nine wounded bystanders remain hospitalized, though none of the injuries are thought to be life threatening, police said. The other six were treated and released.

Matthews and Sinishtaj will be assigned to administrative duty pending a police review of the shooting, a standard procedure whenever an officer discharges his weapon in the line of duty. The officers were also treated for trauma.

Fueling nuclear power with seawater: Tests adsorbent to extract uranium from the ocean

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? When you take a dip in the ocean, nuclear fuel is probably the farthest thing from your mind. Uranium floats in Earth's oceans in trace amounts of just 3 parts per billion, but it adds up. Combined, our oceans hold up to 4.5 billion tons of uranium -- enough to potentially fuel the world's nuclear power plants for 6,500 years.

Countries such as Japan have examined the ocean as a uranium source since the 1960s, but previous approaches have been too expensive to extract the quantities needed for nuclear fuel. Now researchers at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory are tweaking one of those concepts with the goal of making it more efficient and cost-competitive. The research is being done for the Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy.

Japan developed an adsorbent that attaches the uranium-loving chemical group amidoxime to a plastic polymer. ORNL examined the binding process between the plastic and chemical groups and used that knowledge to enhance the uranium-grabbing characteristic of the amidoxime groups on the adsorbent material's surface.

PNNL tested the adsorbent's performance at its Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim, Wash., DOE's only marine research facility. Using filtered seawater from nearby Sequim Bay, PNNL established a laboratory testing process to measure the effectiveness of both Japan's and ORNL's adsorbent materials. Initial tests showed ORNL's adsorbent can soak up more than two times the uranium than the material from Japan.

Results were presented Aug. 21 at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society, which runs Aug. 19-23 in Philadelphia. ORNL chemical engineer Costas Tsouris presented the research team's findings this afternoon, while PNNL chemical oceanographer Gary Gill presented a poster on the PNNL testing program this evening. Tsouris' presentation is part of a larger, day-long oral session on uranium extraction from seawater. Check out the ACS website (link below) for talk and poster abstracts.

U.S. home sales rise, but recovery tenuous | Real ... - Financial Post

WASHINGTON ? U.S. home resales rose in July as low interest rates and a modest improvement in the labour market helped home buying conditions, the National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday.

The NAR said existing home sales rose 2.3% to an annual rate of 4.47 million units last month. That was just below analysts? expectations of a 4.52 million-unit rate.

Nationwide, the median price for a home resale was $187,300 in July, 9.4% higher than in the same month a year earlier.

?Mortgage interest rates have been at record lows this year,? said NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun, adding that the labor market was also showing signs of improvement. ?Combined, these factors are helping to unleash pent up demand.?

The U.S. housing market, which began falling into a deep rut six years ago, has been a relative bright spot in the economy this year. Home prices have shown signs of stabilizing and many economists think residential construction will give a slight boost to the economy this year.

But home building now plays a much smaller economic role than it did before the 2007-2009 recession, and a turn for the worse in the broader economy could easily undo housing?s incipient recovery.

Barring potential problems from abroad like a worsening in Europe?s debt crisis, most economists expect U.S. economic growth will pick up in the second half of the year but still be lacklustre.

A separate report showed applications for U.S. home mortgages tumbled last week, with demand for refinancing drying up as mortgage rates jumped to their highest level since late June.

The Mortgage Bankers Association said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity, which includes both refinancing and home purchase demand, fell 7.4% in the week ended Aug 17.

Fixed 30-year mortgage rates jumped 10 basis points to average 3.86%. Even with the increase, rates are still at relatively cheap levels after falling to record lows in recent months.

Who is the most powerful woman in the world?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Forbes magazine ranked German Chancellor Angela Merkel the most powerful woman in the world for the second year in a row in the annual list dominated by politicians, businesswomen and media figures.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton placed second, followed by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, making the top three spots unchanged from last year.

The list named women involved in policymaking, entertainment, technology and non-profit organizations, among other fields. They were ranked according to influence, the amount of money they control or earn, and media presence.

"These power women exert influence in very different ways and to very different ends, and all with very different impacts on the global community," said Moira Forbes, president and publisher of ForbesWoman.

The magazine noted Merkel's resolve in preserving the European Union and her influence over the euro zone's ongoing debt crisis.

Clinton was applauded for her handling of crises such as the release of a trove of diplomatic cables by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks.

Forbes cited Rousseff for her leadership of the world's eighth-largest economy and approval ratings within her country.

The average age of the 100 power brokers from 28 countries was 55. They had a combined 90 million Twitter followers, Forbes said.

Also in the top five were Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and wife of Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates, and Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times .

Sonia Gandhi, president of the Indian National Congress, followed at No. 6. U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, who had topped the list in 2010, was No. 7.

The list featured newcomers such as actress and performer Jennifer Lopez and billionaire philanthropist and widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs, Laurene Powell Jobs.

Republican U.S. Representative of Minnesota and former White House hopeful Michele Bachmann was among 21 women who fell off the list this year.

Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, was No. 8. The former French cabinet minister has been on the list since it began in 2004.

"So many of these women are in policy or political roles, and their influence ... is only growing so it's not surprising that someone like Merkel or Clinton would continue to be present on the list year to year," Forbes said.

The full list is at www.forbes.com/power-women.

?Om Gal? Answers Your Yoga, Health, Fitness Questions /// We Help ...

Rebecca Pachecco is sometimes known as Om Gal, a blogger who writes about health and fitness and all that jazz. She is also a 500-hour E-RYT yoga teacher and writer, ?has appeared in national ad campaigns for Reebok, Ryka, Ibex, and New Balance,? and is also one of these ?ambassador? things for lululemon.

As Om Gal, Pachecco has started taking some Q&A. It looks and sounds like this:

We weren?t really satisfied with this, so we thought we?d offer an alternate take on these questions seeing as they deserve more than just a nod. Here?s what we came up with:

1. What yoga poses can I do to control knee pain after running?

First, learn the above diagram inside and out. Second, without taking a moment to understand the condition of the questioner?s knees (What the hell is causing the knee pain?) Om Gal suggests sitting in vrksasana for Ms. Sore Knees. Now, we?re more of the opinion that before prescribing a remedy, a person should figure out what?s actually causing the pain. That way, rather than using yoga asana as a band-aid to mask the body?s natural alarm system, you can actually address the cause of the issue, and then use yoga as a supplement to maintain the body?s natural inclination to remain balanced and healthy. So, yeah, maybe vriksasana, but maybe not. See a body-work specialist first.

2. If you were to meet the Dalai Lama face-to-face, what would you say to him?

According to the Dalai Lama?s website, here?s what his daily schedule looks like:

?When His Holiness is at home in Dharamsala, he wakes up at 3.30 a.m. After his morning shower, His Holiness begins the day with prayers, meditations and prostrations until 5.00 a.m. From 5.00 a.m. His Holiness takes a short morning walk around the residential premises. If it is raining outside, His Holiness has a treadmill to use for his walk. Breakfast is served at 5.30 a.m. For breakfast, His Holiness typically has hot porridge, tsampa (barley powder), bread with preserves, and tea. Regularly during breakfast, His Holiness tunes his radio to the BBC World News in English. From 6 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. His Holiness continues his morning meditation and prayers. From around 9.00 a.m. until 11.30 a.m. he studies various Buddhist texts written by the great Buddhist masters. Lunch is served from 11.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. His Holiness?s kitchen in Dharamsala is vegetarian. However, during visits outside of Dharamsala, His Holiness is not necessarily vegetarian. As an ordained Buddhist monk, His Holiness does not have dinner. Should there be a need to discuss some work with his staff or hold some audiences and interviews, His Holiness will visit his office from 12.30 p.m. until around 4.30 p.m. Typically, during an afternoon at the office one interview is scheduled along with several audiences, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan. Upon his return to his residence, His Holiness has evening tea at 6 p.m. He then has time for his evening prayers and meditation from 6.30 p.m. until 8.30 p.m. Finally, after a long 17-hour day His Holiness retires for bed at 8.30 p.m.?

Judging from HH?s insane daily schedule, our guess is that the world?s most recognizable Buddhist exile doesn?t need to hear our two cents on how great he is or how awesome it is that he can be so ?cool in chaos.? Also, it?s my personal belief that telling a real Buddhist that s/he ?is great,? really just puts them in a situation where they have to combat their own ego yet again. Personally, I?d rather not add to that. They?ve got enough on their plate.

3. In your opinion, what is a balanced weekly fitness regiment?

Here we have to agree with Om Gal. Basically, whatever you feel like doing is what you end up doing, so just do that. Of course, there?s a twist! Getting at what you truly ?feel? like doing will take some time once you unpack all that social lazy garbage, so you better get to work figuring out that ?feeling? of what your body really needs. You also have to remember that ?fitness? has no meaning when detached from a simple and sensible ?healthy? lifestyle. Of course, what constitutes ?health,? opens yet another can of worms, so really, you?re up Shit?s Creek on this one.

4. Is it enough for people to simply ?be??

Really? First, figure out what ?to be? means. Then, when you do, let us know if this remains an important question.

5. What do you do when yoga gets monotonous?

Unfortunately, Om Gal misses a glaring opportunity to get to some real root issue stuff with this one. Why suggest to a bored yogini that she look for a new teacher or studio every time yoga gets a little tedious? That?s down right bad advice. Why not invite Ms. Boredom to investigate why she considers monotony to be such a burden, and perhaps help her find ways to unpack that? Boredom is one of the great benefits to spiritual growth (in my/our humble opinion) [See: The Myth of Freedom]. Rather than looking for yet another ?spiritual practice? to latch onto, why not start digging a little?

And, to all you new (-minded) yoga teachers out there: Please try and take this stuff seriously. Yes, it?s crazy that anyone listens to you, but some people do. If you don?t know the answer to a question, don?t pretend. Just say you?ll look into it, and than, do that.

Maine gas prices up 4 cents per gallon

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) ? Maine residents are experiencing more pain at the pump.

Price-monitoring website MaineGasPrices.com reports Monday that the average retail cost of a gallon of gas in the state is up another four cents to an average of $3.83.

Maine prices are now 13 cents above the national average.

Current prices are more than 14 cents per gallon higher than they were at the same time last year and nearly 24 cents higher than a month ago.

A company analyst says price rises are slowing, and prices could start falling as refinery problems are resolved and the summer driving season comes to an end.

Prince Philip responds well to hospital treatment

LONDON (Reuters) - The Queen's 91-year-old husband Prince Philip, who has been admitted to hospital after a recurrence of a bladder infection, is responding well to treatment, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday.

Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was taken to hospital for the third time in eight months on Wednesday while he and the queen were staying at Balmoral, their Scottish royal residence. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

"The Duke of Edinburgh is responding well to treatment. It is unclear when he'll be discharged but is likely to remain in hospital for a few more days," a palace spokesman said.

Philip first required treatment for a bladder infection in June during celebrations to mark his wife's 60 years on the British throne.

That occurred a day after he had braved terrible weather conditions to watch a 1,000-boat flotilla on the River Thames from a royal barge. He was then unable to attend other events including a thanksgiving service for the queen at St Paul's Cathedral.

Last Christmas, he spent four days in hospital and had an operation to clear a blocked artery in his heart after suffering chest pains.

The sprightly prince has continued to carry out royal duties. He accompanied the queen to the opening ceremony of the London Olympics at the end of July and attended a yachting event on the Isle of Wight, off southern England, on Monday.

Here's What The iPad Mini Is Expected To Look Like - Business Insider

Apple is reportedly going to release an "iPad mini" this fall and it will resemble a larger iPod Touch, rather than a smaller iPad, according to two reports tonight.

Seth Weintraub at 9 To 5 Mac and Rene Ritchie at iMore both say the smaller iPad will have thin bezels along its edges, making it more like a bigger iPod Touch, or iPhone. We have included a mock up illustration from iMore to add context.

Ritchie also reports the iPad mini will be lighter and thinner than the full-sized iPad. Again, think more like an iPod Touch, says Ritchie. He also says it will sell for $200.

At first glance it looks odd. A user's fingers would seemingly hit on the touch screen without the wider edges.

But, because it's only supposed to be around 7.85 inches in diameter, the smaller iPad would be easier to hold with one hand. Therefore a users fingers shouldn't hit on the edges of the screen as much.

Think about an iPhone. People don't hold iPhones the same way they hold iPads.

Chromosomal translocations point the way toward personalized cancer care

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? A broken chromosome is like an unmoored beansprout circling in search of attachment. If a cell tries to replicate itself with broken chromosomes, the cell will be killed and so it would very much like to find its lost end. Often, it finds a workable substitute: another nearby chromosome.

When a broken chromosome attaches to another, or when chromosomes use a similar process to exchange genetic material, you have a translocation -- genes end up fused to other genes, encoding a new protein they shouldn't. A recent University of Colorado Cancer Center review in the journal Frontiers of Medicine shows that you also frequently have the cause of cancer -- and in some cases its cure.

"The most famous example is the Philadelphia chromosome -- the translocation and fusion of genes BCR and ABL that causes chronic myeloid leukemia," says Jing Wang, MD, PhD, University of Colorado Cancer Center investigator and assistant professor of immunology at the CU School of Medicine, the review's author.

Other oncogenic translocations include the fusion of genes ALK and EML4 to create what's known as ALK+ non-small cell lung cancer.

The promise of recognizing these cancer-causing translocations is the potential to target cells with these genetic mutations. Find a therapy that seeks and destroys a specific translocation or cells that have learned to depend on a translocation for survival and/or growth, and you can kill cancer without killing surrounding, healthy cells.

In a nutshell, that's the goal of targeted cancer therapy -- the current revolution underway in cancer research to selectively target cancer cells.

"Since their discovery, chromosomal translocations have made a critical impact on diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancers," Wang writes.

In CML, the revolutionary drug Gleevec targets the energy mechanism of cells with the Philadelphia chromosome; in ALK+ lung cancer, the drug crizotinib, developed largely at the CU Cancer Center, targets the energy system of these cells. In both cases, targeted therapies kill cancerous cells with these translocations while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Recognizing specific translocations can also allow doctors to offer a more accurate prognosis and may inform treatment decisions.

Still, "there are many challenges in this developing science," Wang says. "The first is describing the mechanism of these translocations, for example, whether chromosomes that are near each other are prone to joining in ways that allow them to exchange or fuse genetic material, or if chromosomes that spontaneously break then go looking around for partners." There are scientists on either side of this breakage first or contact first hypothesis.

Another challenge is discovering which translocations cause cancer and which just happen to hitchhike along with other mutations that are cancer's true cause.

"From human tumors, you can get frequency data," Wang says -- you can discover what translocations are frequent in types of cancer. "But this is correlative. To discover if a translocation is oncogenic, you need other models."

New technologies including next-gen DNA sequencing make it increasingly easy to discover the genetic differences between cancerous and healthy cells. "In 20 years we're talking about personalizing the genome," Wang says, meaning that every individual cancer patient could be genetically screened for every genetic mutation and then treatment based on the signature of their mutations.

But discovering which mutations matter is another story. When you pinpoint a mutation, for obvious reasons you can't create a translocation in a human and then watch to see if cancer develops. And so the process of vetting thousands of translocations for their oncogenic power is tedious and involved.

Even once you discover an oncogenic translocation, it remains unsure whether the discovery will prove therapeutically useful. "Sometimes even when we know a translocation is important, we might not be able to do anything about it," Wang says. "Sometimes these translocations might be present in healthy cells that we don't want to kill or some genes involved in translocations may be essential factors for cell survival. For example, we know that c-myc gene is upregulated in specific type of lymphomas but targeting c-myc gene will result in very high toxicity. Or in still other cases drugging the target can be more difficult than in others."

Today's challenge may be tomorrow's cure. Right now we're in the midst of a cancer care revolution toward personalized care based on a cancer's genetic signature -- and the study and exploitation of chromosomal translocations may lead the way.

This work was supported by University of Colorado School of Medicine start-up fund, Leukemia Research Foundation and the Boettcher Foundation Webb-Waring Biomedical Research Award.

Election fatigue hits Wis. in 4-way Senate primary

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Even with the biggest name in modern Wisconsin politics, the Republican primary in a highly competitive U.S. Senate race appears headed for a fractious four-way battle Tuesday. Many election-weary voters simply haven't made up their minds.

Tommy Thompson, the former governor and Cabinet secretary, has near universal name recognition in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl. A recent poll finds Thompson leading the GOP field, but nearly 1 in 5 voters hasn't settled on a nominee.

Thompson had expected an uncontested run for the nomination given that his history with the party dates back to his first election victory in 1966 and includes 14 years as governor. He also served as health and human services secretary under President George W. Bush. But the party has grown more conservative since he left the governorship in 2001, and his three challengers argue that they are more in touch with modern Republicans than the 70-year-old Thompson.

The campaigns are spending millions on television ads trying to sway undecided voters, and each candidate seems to appeal to a slightly different constituency. Thompson is the experienced workhorse with the most political ties. Former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann is the tea party favorite. Eric Hovde is the political newcomer who made millions as a businessman. And Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald has the most direct ties to Gov. Scott Walker, who survived a high-profile recall election just two months ago.

One theory is that Wisconsin is enduring a political hangover after that recall election, which Democrats organized as payback for Walker's push to strip most public workers of nearly all their collective bargaining rights. And, the primary is a month sooner than it used to be to comply with federal law. The result: Only 20 percent turnout is predicted.

"Wisconsin has been the state of chaos and I think people needed a break after the recall election and just weren't paying attention, unfortunately," said Nancy Milholland, a co-organizer of the Racine Tea Party. "All of our time spent working and focusing on the recall election would have been directed at the United States Senate race. The recall sucked the air out of the room."

The winner of the Republican race will take on Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, who is uncontested. No Republican has held the seat since 1957 ? the demagogic Sen. Joe McCarthy of "McCarthyism" infamy ? but the GOP sees it as a pickup opportunity as they try to wrest majority control from the Democrats.

Keith Best, a salesman from the Republican stronghold of Waukesha, acknowledges that the recall took attention away from the primary but says he's undecided because all four candidates are strong.

"I probably won't make up my mind until I walk into the poll that Tuesday," Best said. "Game Day decision."

Republican voters are getting few cues from the state's most powerful GOP officer holders. Both Walker and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson have refused to throw their support behind anyone in the primary, fearing they'd create divisions in the ranks heading into the November matchup with Baldwin, who has been in the House since 1999.

As much as they've tried to differentiate themselves, primarily through television ads, the candidates largely agree on major issues. All have focused their campaigns on their disdain for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul and what they see as the need to rein in government spending and reduce the debt.

A poll released on Wednesday by the Marquette University Law School found Thompson with an 8 percentage point lead over Hovde, which was just within the 4.4 percentage point margin of error. That, coupled with the number of undecideds, has the campaigns, observers and voters bracing for a late night.

"Hovde had a great start, Neumann's having a good close, and Tommy's Tommy," said Republican strategist Mark Graul. "I think it's going to be incredibly close."

Thompson is counting on his name recognition to resonate with people who haven't made their choice.

"No one has run a state government, and no one has won the state not once but five times," Thompson said. "There's no question in my mind I'm the best candidate."

Hovde is making the most noise, spending at least $4 million of his own money on a steady stream of ads that make the case for his fiscal conservatism and attack Thompson and Neumann.

The outsider businessman approach was successful for other Republican candidates in 2010 such as Johnson, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Florida Gov. Rick Scott. Hovde said he models his campaign on that of Johnson, who also came out of nowhere and managed to knock off Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold.

Hovde worked as a hedge fund investor for 24 years in Washington, experience that his opponents attack. They also point to a spotty voting record and business deals with the government that appear to run contrary to his anti-spending rhetoric.
