Crazy ?Spam? Email About Print Cancellation *Is* Actually From The New York Times

Screen Shot 2011-12-28 at 11.24.33 AMIf you're a New York Times subscriber -- or even if you're not -- you may have received that following email this morning, implying that you have cancelled your subscription. Many many people did, it's all over the tweets.? Even though the email was sent from an address that had sent out legitimate emails in the past, "email.newyorktimes.com," it wasn't actually from the New York Times, as some of their more tech hipster reporters and their official Twitter account confirmed, "If you received an email today about canceling your NYT subscription, ignore it. It's not from us.?

Google Webmaster Tools Web Results Vs. API Results

Google Webmaster Tools APIThere are some reports via Google Webmaster Help forums that the Webmaster Tools API results do not match up always with the Webmaster Tools web console.

One developer noticed the differences and posted a question in the forums asking:

I'm using the Google Webmaster Tools API to get data about our site's keywords (in Google's eyes).

It's great.

But something's strange- the keywords showing up in the API feed are not quite the same as what's showing up when we used the web-based tool.

Has anybody else noticed this difference in the data?

I know that the web-based data is quite a few days behind, so one theory I have is that the API data is fresher. Just guessing at this point.

This is not uncommon being that the data is refreshed often and data filters can play a role in the results. But also, sometimes, APIs access slightly different data sources and can throw the numbers off. Finally, Webmaster Tools is known to have reporting bugs often - so that can play a factor also.

Or maybe, this was just a random fluke? Do you have this as an issue also?

Forum discussion at Google Webmaster Help.

Back in campaign mode, presidential hopefuls focus

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)

(AP) ? Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode after a brief Christmas respite, with Rick Santorum planning a hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many still undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdout caucusgoers still weighing their options.

Romney, who kept this state at arm's length for most of the year, seemed to increase his efforts in Iowa as polls found him in a stronger position. He planned to talk with supporters in a series of telephone calls here and to New Hampshire and Florida on Monday between working on a speech that aides described as his final pitch to Iowans. Romney planned to deliver that speech Tuesday evening and then set out on a bus tour of Iowa.

However, he was to share the highways with Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. All scheduled bus tours to start then, too.

Each is running out of time and looking to derail Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who seems to have the most sophisticated network of volunteers ready to organize ahead of the caucuses. Paul was to return to Iowa this week to meet with supporters he has kept in touch with since his unsuccessful run in 2008.

Others, too, were ready to turn on their own political machines and had fresh ads ready to air.

Gingrich, who last week criticized the negative tone of the campaign, was ready to directly challenge Romney on the economy, an issue Romney has made central to his campaign. Gingrich's standing in public and private polls has slipped as he faced unrelenting criticism from the candidates and their allies.

Gingrich was expected to use clips from Romney's previous campaigns distancing himself from President Ronald Reagan and pitch Gingrich's economic plan as "Reaganomics 2.0." Gingrich also was expected to compare Romney's tax plan with his own.

Santorum, meanwhile, planned to announce support from another wave of Iowa conservatives. He scheduled a pheasant hunting trip in Adel for Monday afternoon. While he trails in polls and has not spent significant money on ads, Santorum is hoping his nonstop courtship of Iowans yields a late surge. He visited all 99 of Iowa's counties during the summer ? an accomplishment Bachmann has feverishly tried to replicate.

Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, last week darted through small towns, reminding voters that Santorum lost his 2006 re-election bid in a blowout and that Paul's foreign policy views were outside the party's orthodoxy. Looking to recapture voters' interest, her plan was to return to hand-to-hand campaigning on Tuesday.

Perry, too, was looking to keep up his message: his rivals are insiders unable to change Washington. He planned to return to his tour bus on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman kept his focus on New Hampshire. Early in the campaign, he said he would not compete in Iowa and instead make his start in New Hampshire, which comes second on the nominating calendar.

Urijah Faber shaves his famous locks to support sister

One of Urijah Faber's trademarks, his golden brown hair, is now gone after he shaved his head to support his ailing sister.

The day after Thanksgiving, his 19-year-old sister was in a serious car accident. Michaela has been in the hospital since then, and had brain surgery requiring a shaved head. Faber, who will soon begin coaching on "The Ultimate Fighter" against bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, has been by his sister's side through much of her trauma.

He tweeted before the haircut that it's been 12 years since he had it that short, but was happy because Michaella is coming home on Friday. Because of his new haircut, she won't be the only person at family holiday celebrations without any hair.

That's a Christmas story that will make you smile even if your heart is two sizes too small.

Hearing Devices More Apt to Fail in Children Who Had Meningitis (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 22 (HealthDay News) -- For children who have an implanted cochlear device, rates for replacement due to device failure are low. However, children who have hearing loss caused by bacterial meningitis before a device was implanted appear to be at increased risk for it to fail, a new study finds.

A cochlear implant (CI) is a small device that helps provide a sense of sound to people who have severe hearing loss or are deaf, according to the U.S. National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

In this study, Canadian researchers looked at the medical records of 738 children who received a total of 971 cochlear implant devices between 1990 and 2010. The children's median age when they first received a cochlear implant was 33 months.

During the 20-year study period, 34 of the children required reimplantation, a rate of about 3 percent. The average time to device failure was 61 months. Seven of the 34 children had meningitis before they received their first cochlear implant.

After reimplantation, most of the children maintained or improved their best speech performance before the failure of the initial device, the researchers found.

"In conclusion, we found a very low rate of CI failure in a pediatric implant series and several related factors that may account for this low rate," wrote Dr. Antoine Eskander, of the University of Toronto, and colleagues in a journal news release.

"Children who develop meningitis before CI appear to be at an increased risk of device failure. Most patients maintain or improve their best preoperative level of speech perception after CI reimplantation, but patients with gradual device failure have less chance of good hearing recovery," they concluded.

The study appears in the December issue of the journal Archives of Otolaryngology -- Head & Neck Surgery.

'30 Rock' Season 6 Premiere: How Liz Lemon Spent Her Christmas (VIDEO)

"30 Rock" is no stranger to Christmas-themed episodes ... except for Season 6. The show returns to NBC just a few weeks after the holidays (Thurs., Jan. 12 at 8 p.m. EST), but EW has a sneak peek at the premiere. The audience may not see Liz Lemon's (Tina Fey) drunken holiday exploits this season, but they will certainly hear about them.

"I know exactly how your holidays were," Jack (Alec Baldwin) tells Liz in the clip. "You took the train to your parents house. On Christmas Eve you forgot that eggnog has alcohol in it and got into a shoving match with your aunt about who puts the star on top of the tree."

In Liz's defense, it was her turn.

When "30 Rock" kicks off, Liz will have a new man in her life. "Liz is completely re-energized," Fey said in a new NBC promo. The reason? She has a hot new boyfriend played by James Marsden.

"She's trying to loosen up a little bit by dating somebody who is a little more laid-back," Marsden said. "That could either be good for her or ultimately bad for her."

Other Season 6 guest stars lined up for the first few episodes include Kelsey Grammer, Denise Richards, Will Arnett and Kristen Schaal.

Barbara Boxer's Transportation Bill Would Drop Environmental Criteria In Much-Touted TIFIA Loan Program

NEW YORK -- A bipartisan transportation bill sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer would dramatically expand a federal program that finances "innovative" transportation projects. But in order to secure the expansion of the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA), Boxer had to introduce new rules that would strip away current criteria favoring environmentally sustainable projects, progressive transportation advocates say.

Boxer's transportation bill sailed through the Senate Environment and Public Works committee in an 18-0 bipartisan vote on Nov. 9. But critics say it came at a price for the TIFIA program, which would no longer give environmentally sustainable projects a leg up in the selection process.

"At a time when the nation's transportation system is starved for funds and there is a consensus that dollars need to be spent more wisely, it is outrageous that the one program that would be massively increased would no longer try to deliver the best bang for each buck," said Phineas Baxandall, a senior analyst at US PIRG, a nonprofit public interest advocacy group.

TIFIA has recently been touted by both Democrats and Republicans as an example of how to prop up infrastructure financing in a time of budget deficits. About $110 million a year in federal funds is turned into $1.1 billion in federally-supported loans, which then go a third of the way toward leveraging loans from private sources.

Because TIFIA is a loan program, projects have to find some way of paying back the federal government. The revenue stream is most often a toll or other "user fee," but sometimes it's something like Los Angele's 2008 Measure R sales tax. Although TIFIA is run through the Federal Highway Administration, its loans have been used to support everything from toll roads in Texas to light rail in Denver.

The only problem: At a time when private financing is hard to come by, everybody wants in on the action. This year there were 34 requests for $14 billion in loans -- 14 times more than what the program could support. A lot of cities and states wound up empty-handed.

So when the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee met to hammer out a deal on a new transportation bill, consensus was quickly reached on vastly expanding the size of TIFIA's annual funding from $122 million to $1 billion a year. That money could in turn support up to $10 billion in federal loans.

It was something of a breakthrough in the transportation world. For years Congress has patched together short-term extensions of the transportation bill. The EPW proposal sponsored by Boxer offers a way out -- and, she hopes, a way to finance LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's dream of building 30 years of transportation projects in a decade.

But the bipartisan consensus on the transportation bill appears to have come at a price. One apparent sticking point for Senate Republicans, led by outspoken climate change denier James Inhofe (R-Okla.), the ranking member on EPW, was the 20 percent weight TIFIA puts on "the extent to which the project helps maintain or protect the environment."

That criterion, introduced by the Obama administration, gives mass transit a leg up against toll roads and highways. But it's anathema to critics like the libertarian Reason Foundation's Robert Poole, who argued that the emphasis on environmental sustainability "has apparently led to toll projects that add highway capacity getting aced out."

"Senator Boxer's working in an environment where she's got to get support from people on the other side of the aisle, and these are the types of issues she's hammering out," said Raffi Hamparian, director for federal affairs at the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Phineas Baxandall, a senior analyst at U.S. PIRG, said he thinks Boxer may have cut a bad deal. He argues that doing away with TIFIA's selection criteria means the U.S. Department of Transportation will be forced to give money to any transportation project that meets bare-bones financial eligibility requirements. Under this rolling selection process, when the $1 billion annual federal credit support is gone, it's gone for the year.

Toll roads, backed by private investors looking to make a buck off of "public-private partnerships," will be first in line, he argued, since they have plans that are "just ready to go off the shelf."

"Those companies are going to likely get the lion's share of TIFIA funds. And those companies have a lot of power on Wall Street and make a lot of campaign donations, and just have a lot of power," he said.

Los Angeles hopes it will get some of that TIFIA money. Not so fast, Baxandall said. "Places like Atlanta and L.A. are hoping that the new bounty of TIFIA will allow them to finance public transit expansions, but they are likely to find the money already claimed by private toll road projects in places like Florida and Texas."

Others aren't so sure that mass transit and toll roads are mutually exclusive. Although the selection criterion will be gone, environmentally friendly transportation secretaries will still find ways to make sure sustainable projects head to the front of the line, they argue.

A spokesperson who is a staff member of the Senate EPW committee said, "This provision continues to enable the secretary to ensure that each project receives careful consideration. We believe that strong projects will succeed in the new program."

Roy Kienitz, who was until recently the Department of Transportation's under secretary for policy, said he thought the program's vastly expanded size might mean there will be plenty of space for all of the projects that meet the eligibility requirements.

Although TIFIA was vastly oversubscribed this year, Kienitz said, not all of the applications were truly eligible. "Of the people who are applying, I would say at least half of them fall into the criteria of either a) they just don't have a realistic idea of a project for a whole host of reasons or b) they may have realistic criteria for a project, but they just haven't done their homework."

Hamparian, of LA's Metro, is sure that his city's project, at the least, will win if TIFIA is expanded.

"We're pretty confident that we're in a good position to present our project for consideration for TIFIA loans," he said. "Our bottom line is that we've worked very closely with Senator Boxer and we're very supportive of the final product."

Boxer's bill is still far from passage. More Senate committees will take a shot at the transportation bill soon, and then the GOP-controlled House will also have its say. Some observers predict the long-awaited arrival of a new transportation bill could simply get pushed off for an additional year in favor of another short-term extension.
